New owner with 1949 Hudson
Hey everyone I'm new to the Hudson world. I sold my T-bucket and bought a 49 2 door with a 51 308 flat head 6 and dual carbs. Needed something I could take the family in. The car is really solid but sat for a few years before I got it so I have to put tires on it and go through the carbs before it will be road worthy. It will need some attention in the interior but it's ok for now. The headliner is falling so I will have to address that but otherwise I plan on just driving it and enjoying it for awhile. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions for you guys.
Here are a few pictures of it. Also how do I know if it has overdrive or not? Thanks

Here is a short video of it running, the sound cuts out about 1/2 way through but you get the idea

Beautiful. Is that color the "Toro Red Light"?
ps - the first two links you provided don't work. I got a 'page not found' error. The video works but only has sound for the first 1/2 of it.

I haven't a clue what the color name is, I don't know why the sound cuts out in the video. I uploaded it wirelessly maybe that has something to do with it. I loaded more pics so hopefully these will work.0

There will be a letter stamped on the upper passenger door hinge that relates to the original color. My 49 is RM (Red Maroon) Looks like a nice car. The 49 is my favorite.
Clues to the overdrive, is a knob under the dash about 4 in to the right of the steering column. Also, the tranny will have a 8 1/2 inch extension and a solonoid the size of a soup can on the left side of it.0 -
The OD knob is silver colored metal, flat with a couple concentric rings stamped in it, and about 1-1/4" in diameter. And like Josh said, it's UNDER the dash, not part of the array of knobs and things on the dash itself.0

It will or should have a kick down switch under the foot feed. This switch will disingage the overdrive when you push the footfeed clear down.0

sorry old school.--- Accelerator pedal0
-
Unless somebody like me has moved it. Mine is lower left of the clutch. Kick it down without flooring it. I don't do it much any more but you can clutch and kick it down at the same time, allowing you to use all 6 speeds.0

OK here is a picture of the knob in question. It appears to be a cable that goes out the firewall and down under the car. I haven't been able to get under the car yet to see where it goes.0
-
That's the overdrive in/out cable, so it does have overdrive unless someone removed the o/d trans and left the cable. Not likely. So, with the 308 and overdrive it will make a nice hwy cruiser.

Awesome, thanks for that info. One more dumb question if I may. It has a 6=8 sticker on the vent window. What is that? What does it mean?0
-
It refers to Hudsons domination of the NASCAR races when thier 6 cylinder cars out ran all the V-8"s from 1951-1955,

That was the Jack Clifford sign when you bought parts from him. He sold hot rod stuff to make your Hudson run faster. It stands for Six cylinder equals eight cylinders. He is with us no longer sorry to say. Walt.0

Thank you for being more specific Walt ,I forgot who made the stickers,,

Actually, as published a 1970's issue of the North Texas News (publication of the North Texas Chapter) 6=8 is actually missing two zeros. It should be 60=80 which translates to a wife 60 inches tall will give her husband 80 whacks when she catches him looking at the Miss Hudson cheese-cake pictures that the North Texas chapter published for a while.

Well, if the North Texas bunch could publish cheese-cake the New England Chapter went one better and published a topless photo of a young lady in our newsletter, the Nor'by NorEast. Believe or not.

And here's the rest of the story. The young lady was my young daughter who was round 2 or 3 years old at the time. Oh, we had fun in the 70's. LOL We had a grand time building up the photograph over a period of a few months. The letters we got - surprisingly some were even pro-photo. When we finally published it those in on the scam had a great laugh.0 -
Thanks for the info and great story hudsontech!!! I guess I'll be keeping that sticker. It's got a cool back story.0

Alex, at least it wasnt Aunt Hester!0

I'm going to do an oil change before running it much more, what weight oil do these motors prefer?0
-
20w50 would be good for it ,
Roger0 -
Wow I wouldn't have guessed that, thanks. I guess I have alot to learn about these motors.0

Well the 308 is a full preasure system with insert bearings like any modern motor. Yours in particular just by looking at it has been well cared for .If it was am old barn find I may have thought 20or 30 weight oil with no detergent till you took pan off to clean it out. Modern oils tend to flush out the old built up crap in a engine that has sat for 30 years . Then it clogs up your oil pump pick up screen.
But your car looks fairly fresh so Use modern oil ,change it frequently and it will do fine.
