'49 rear axle....can anyone use this?

Hi All,

I've taken the rear end out of my '49....this is free for the taking if anyone can use it. I live in western WA. PM me if want it.

    I would love to have it as a spare for mine... I once had an axle break. But the shipping to Germany would probably kill us...

    What ratio? 4:56 or 4:11?

    Not sure, it was behind a 262 with a 3 spd w/od. Whether or not it's the original one behind that combo I'm not sure. One of the drums is stuck, I can't comment on what it looks like inside, but it's probably only useable for parts, not a functional replacement.

    If I remember right, the 4.56 gearset came behind the automatic???

    Hello Lee

    You probably know this but I'll pass it along to anyone who may not know how to easily check their gear ratio.

    Block front wheel, brake off, trans in neutral, jack up one rear wheel, mark driveshaft or pinion flange with chalk and mark wheel or drum. Turn wheel or drum 2 complet turns while counting the number of times the chalk mark on the driveshaft or drum turns. The number of turns is the gear ratio.

    Since one brake drum is stuck and the other drum turns just mark the pinion flange and turn the drum 2 turns while counting the the number of times the flange turns.

    If no one claims it.. At least pull both axles and save both axle/bearing assemblys. I carry one wrapped in an oily cloth and sealed in the trunk of my 49... I used to carry a spare rear wheel bearing, but The thought of having to replace it "on the road' was not pleasing..At least with an axle/bearing, I could get home and do the shimming later.

    After you pull the axles, pull the punkin. Probably OK. Good for a gear change for somebody.

    4.56 was not for the automatic , the Hydromatic cars had something in the three's like 3.31. As this would make up for the slipage of the torque converter. That is my recollection ,

    The Hudson built rear axle for Hydramatic equipped cars was a 3.58. That is the highest ratio gear set that Hudson ever used in their own axle.

    I'll check the ratio tonight....are there any other stamped numbers or tags I should check for?

    This was underneath what I think may have been a Montana Sheriff's car, so the possibility of if being swapped out or highly abused is high :-)
